

Finance generally – 41 year career as a chartered accountant in private practice. Office Managing Partner at Ernst & Young until 2002, then a partner in a large local firm (Smailes Goldie (SG).
I formed and have led SG’s Academy Group for the last 10 years, until my retirement in March 2019.
I chair a MAT in East Hull, which comprises 1 secondary, 2 APs and 2 primaries and which has just merged with a York-based MAT. I am also a governor at a LA primary school.
In addition, I sit on the Audit Committee of the University of Hull and am the ICAEW Council Member for Humberside & District Society of Chartered Accountants.
I Chair Age UK (Hull) Ltd and Northern Academy of Performing Arts Educational Trust and am the Finance Trustee for Child Dynamix, a charity that works with children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

See answer to section 2 above. I also spent 8½ years as a non-executive director of Humber NHS Foundation Trust, involved in the formation of the Foundation Trust. I also chaired its Audit Committee and Charitable Funds Committee.
In 2016 Archbishop Sentamu Academy (ASA) was placed in Special Measures by OfSted. I transferred all non-educational committees and work to the MAT board and focussed ASA board meetings solely on Teaching and Learning and Pupil Outcomes. Along with the vice-Chair, I organised “deep dive” days for trustees so that they could find out directly what was working well and not working well. ASA has now emerged from SM and is on its way to good, having been rated as good in the categories of “Effectiveness of leadership and management”, “Personal development, behaviour and welfare”; and “16 to 19 study programmes”. One encouraging quote from the February 2018 Report was: “Leaders and managers, including governors, are passionate about giving pupils the best opportunities for future success. Leaders have driven the improvements to the quality of education in this school with determination.”
Along with one of my younger partners, I was responsible for my firm’s GDPR compliance procedures, data audits, etc.

I have been, and currently am, a member of various boards and I chair 3 of them. I was a trustee/director of Archbishop Sentamu Academy when it converted to a MAT and have seen the formation of a MAT from the inside.
